Online Master's Nursing Degrees
The Master of Science in Nursing is a postgraduate degree that opens many doors for experienced nurses looking to advance their career. In this 2-3 year program, students can earn a general MSN degree or specialize in fields like education, administration, leadership, midwifery and so on. Most online MSN degrees can be completed online since entrants to these programs already have extensive nursing experience. Some programs require additional clinical experience, so applicants should verify requirements with each individual school.
Degree Prerequisites
While most MSN aspirants already hold a BSN, there are more extensive master’s level programs that admit college graduates, LPNs and RNs.
Some MSN programs, also known as direct or graduate or master’s entry MSN programs, are open to college graduates who are new to nursing. Entrants to this course complete a shortened version of the BSN degree before moving on the MSN curriculum. Direct entry MSN programs can be completed within 3 years, though there are some accelerated programs that can be finished within 2 years.
Post Graduation Expectations
An MSN degree is required to earn a Ph D or a Doctorate in Nursing. Upon completing an MSN, students can continue their education and specialize in certain fields through post-graduate certification credits to become Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Midwives, Nurse Anesthetists, Clinical Nurse Specialists and Clinical Nurse Leaders. Most MSN degrees offer some specialization during the two-year course.
